Enjoy a 5-star hotel experience every night.
Staying in a 5-star hotel is quite a sensory experience. The look, feel, smell, sound (or lack thereof) can create a bedroom environment you’ll never want to leave. However, you can recreate the same level of luxury at home.
Jay Kallos, senior vice president of architecture at Ashton Woods in Atlanta, GA, we learn that the master suite should be a destination and it should feel like an oasis. “It’s especially luxurious if it’s in its own area of the house, away from secondary bedrooms and the laundry room.” Privacy leads the way, but he says layering amenities ups the wow factor.
Your bedroom should feel like an oasis.
“I love a vestibule entry that gives a sense of arrival – even a foyer that offers an even greater sense of privacy.” A front door leads to the bedroom, closet and bathroom. “This gives you more privacy and creates a room that is much easier to furnish,” says Kallos.
Walls
Darker colors can create comfort.
Next, you’ll need to consider the bedroom walls, and color can add personalization and determine the mood. “I like dark bedrooms because darker colors bring a warm, secluded energy,” says Leigh SpicherNational Director of Ashton Woods Design Studios, based in Orlando, Florida.
She recommends adding a specialty wall treatment like trim or wallpaper. “Any type of wall treatment that is not a basic, neutral paint will immediately take your design to a new level of luxury.”
Wall treatments add depth and interest.
His point of view is shared by Tama Bell, an interior designer in Sebastopol, California, who recommends a wall treatment to cocoon the space. “We like to use texture, in grasscloth or sisal, sometimes in plain – or you can go further and add a pattern.” The goal is to add interest, but she says the room should still be grounded and quiet.
Lighting
Lighting also plays a role in creating a luxurious bedroom. “We want to provide a room with good overall general lighting, which can be achieved with recessed or task lighting, depending on your preference,” says Bell. She suggests a chandelier to add drama and a focal point in the room. “And, of course, bedside lighting in the form of a wall or table lamp so you can relax and read.”
Instead of lamps, Spicher also recommends using sconces or pendants. “It takes a little more planning with an electrician, but the effort is rewarded with overall luxury — and you have more space on your nightstand,” she says.
Ground
Bell says her team likes to use hardwood floors throughout the home, then use rugs to add softness underfoot. “The rug is such an opportunity for texture and a beautiful way to add color to a room.” But the main thing is to make sure that the carpet is soft and plush underfoot. “It will create a feeling of luxury,” she explains.
Furniture
As for the bed, Bells says she often uses an upholstered bed, which adds to the cozy feeling. “We love to personalize with luxurious, heavy-handle fabrics, often linen, Boucle or mohair if budget allows.”
Spicher recommends adding a nice accent chair, bench or ottoman. “Just an extra layer of decor, that also provides function — a place to read, put your shoes on, etc. — creates a feeling of luxury,” she says.
Bedding and pillows complete the look. “Starting with a good quality sheet set, we like satin and linen, depending on the season,” says Bell. She also recommends a comforter or down comforter, as well as layering a bedspread and blanket. “We try to be disciplined with pillows, so that it’s not a chore to make your bed, but to have enough decorative pillows to make the bed complete and interesting.” Finish with draperies or roman shades. “It’s so fun to use fabric for window coverings that matches the wallpaper,” she says.
These are some of the elements that can help create a luxurious bedroom.
