5+ Generative AI Writing Tools Everyone Should Know
Writing is one of the most popular use cases for generative AI. That’s thanks to the ability of tools like ChatGPT and Gemini to create any type of text, from poetry and fiction to technical documents.
Their ability to understand context and imitate any human writing style in order to create comprehensive content on any topic is probably their most impressive ability today.
However, it should be remembered that these large language model (LLM) tools are limited, for the most part, to the construction of texts based on their training data. This means that it is not necessarily effective at communicating new ideas or writing in a way that will grab the attention of a human audience.
But when it comes to brainstorming, writing, structuring, researching, and fact-checking, it can be a powerful tool that can save time and effort for anyone who needs to create written content .
It can also speed up all kinds of everyday writing tasks, such as writing emails or creating product descriptions for e-commerce businesses.
Five of My Favorite Generative AI Writing Tools
The most popular generative AI tools are all capable of creating written text. But here I’m focusing on those that specifically provide features and functions designed to help with writing. Here are some of the most useful and interesting players on the field today:
Jasper
Jasper was one of the first writing tools specialized in generative AI, positioning itself as a solution for marketers needing to create text quickly. It provides templates that speed up the process of generating blogs, social media posts or product listings.
This gives it an advantage over more general genAI tools which often start you with a blank page and require careful instructions if you want them to follow a process for creating multiple writing items. It also adapts to its user’s style and voice over time.
Another advantage over general-purpose tools (like ChatGPT) is that Jasper does not rely on any single language model. While its output will be powered by models from OpenAI, including GPT-4, it would also use models created by Google, Anthropic and more. Jasper isn’t the cheapest option on the market, but it stands out by providing a set of tailor-made solutions for marketing-focused writers.
Sudowrite
One thing that defines Sudowrite aside, it is specially designed for fiction writers. So if you’re looking for an AI that could help you write the next Game Of Thrones, it could be the right choice for you!
Sudowrite is built around tools that can help fiction writers, such as brainstorming aids, restructuring sentences to make them more readable or more exciting, and providing detailed feedback on their own writing. It is designed to understand concepts such as audiences and genres, as well as what makes a text engaging for an audience to read. Not sure where your story is going? Just press the Write button and let it continue the tale, giving you options to choose from and imitating your own tone and voice!
any word
any word focuses on what it calls “performance content,” content designed to sell, generate clicks, or encourage audiences to take some other form of action.
It includes an “expected performance” metric that attempts to predict how well your content will be enjoyed by your audience. The goal is to automate the analysis of data that marketers use when creating and publishing content at the time of writing to encourage greater engagement.
Unlike some of the other options here, this solution is firmly marketed as a commercial solution and is not the best choice for amateur writers or those starting a small business marketing strategy from scratch. It is accessible via an API rather than a chatbot-friendly web interface.
But for established businesses that have lots of data and an established content pipeline and want to start taking advantage of AI-driven analytics, it’s a good option.
Canva magic writing
Okay, so this one isn’t a standalone writing tool. It is the writing element of the versatile cloud-based design platform. Cloth which recently added a ton of AI features under the Magic heading.
As you might expect, this one is primarily focused on writing as a design element rather than creating simple, long text. This means it is optimized for creating marketing emails, social media ads, and ad copy. I especially like how it lets you adjust the tone of your text. This is something you’ll need to dive into quickly engineering if you’re relying on something like ChatGPT or Gemini to write marketing copy. One of the differences when using a specialized platform is that this type of use case-specific function is built into the user interface, so it’s always at your fingertips.
Grammar
Grammar has been around for a long time and has always been marketed as an AI typing assistant. But a major overhaul last year saw the introduction of Grammarly GO, its AI-augmented generative service. Currently still in beta but available to most users, GO uses extended language algorithms to provide content suggestions and synonyms and to suggest better ways to say what you want to say.
It is not a standalone tool capable of producing long-form content, but rather a plugin that can be integrated into software ranging from word processors to web browsers—anywhere you want to write text. It also assesses the readability of your text, detects plagiarism and gives automated advice on word choice and sentence structure. It may not be mentioned in as many news stories as new players like ChatGPT or Google Gemini, but as a complete writing assistant for the type of writing most people do every day, it’s hard to beat.
