Bring the outdoors inside with just a few changes.
Fall is in the air and one of the great things about this season – aside from the cooler weather – is the opportunity to see such beautiful fall colors. However, you don’t always have to go outside to see these brilliant hues. Here’s how to incorporate the sumptuous fall colors into your home.
Decorate with foliage
It’s the time of year to replace your centerpieces with fall foliage and dried branches, recommends Han Dang, co-founder and director of Very nice studio in Houston, Texas. “Fall foliage looks attractive when decorated in bundles of three or more branches,” she says. Dang also recommends purchasing taller/longer branches to create larger arrangements, as this will add more depth to a room.
Monica Breese, founder of The designed home in Brooklyn, also recommends using foliage and flowers as an easy way to change up the statement. “Update your flowers, add mums outside, bring gorgeous branches inside, and create a centerpiece with fall flowers,” she recommends.
Experiment with lighting
Using light is another way to bring the sumptuous fall colors into your home. “Remember to not only incorporate attractive lighting fixtures, but also pay attention to light colors and temperatures for even color distribution throughout your home,” advises Vy Truong, co-founder and director of Very nice studio in Houston, Texas. She says amber bulbs and lights are great mood-setters. Dang recommends adding ambient lighting that produces light temperatures of 2700K to 3000K for ambiance control.
Embrace Jewel Tones
Dark colors are moody and beautiful.
Yellow and orange may be the first colors you think of, but Leigh Spichernational director of design studios Ashton Woods Homes, says the fall palette is no longer limited to these two colors. “Layer warm jewel tones like sapphire, emerald and garnet,” she says. In fact, Spicher recommends using these colors to paint your home. “Paint is your friend, and it’s simple to update a kitchen island, a focal wall, or even go big and paint the entire room your favorite warm, jewel-toned fall tone.”
The color black is always trendy.
Spicher also recommends using the color black: “It’s the ultimate fall color, the luxury color, literally anywhere. » And warm, earthy blacks aren’t just for a fall update. Spicher says it’s the new timeless trend to watch. “Mix matte black with natural grains and you have a perfect introduction to autumn that will undoubtedly also usher in the new year. »
Add accent furniture
Accent furniture can add texture and color.
Consider adding a seasonal accent chair. Spicher says you can find affordable options almost anywhere. “Find one in a luscious fall color like forest green, gold, or burgundy, and add it to the living room, guest bedroom, or go big by swapping out dining chairs, too.” Some of her favorite fall textures are chenille or high-performance velvet.
Heather Mastrangeli, lead designer at Innovative design in Downers Grove, Illinois, tells us that incorporating luscious fall colors into your home can be as simple or complex as you’d like.
“Rich, caramel-colored leather furniture brings a fall feel, and I have a caramel-colored leather chair that provides warmth all year round.”
Switchable furniture
However, Mastrangeli says something simple like an inviting velvet cushion can also do the trick.
“I fully embrace the season with gold velvet cushions that have a lush etched texture,” she explains.
Truong also recommends changing decorative pillows or pillow colors to fall oranges and fall browns. “Keep in mind that investing in non-embellished, printed or patterned cushion covers and opting for solid-colored covers will help incorporate different types of decor – as well as provide functional reuse goals beyond simple holiday decor.”
Breese tells us she always swaps blankets and pillows in her bedrooms and living room. “I like to update my candles with warm colors and add fall scents like vanilla or apple spice,” she says.
Eril Serbetci, co-founder and designer at Spring darling in New York, enjoys sitting in a cozy corner and watching nature transform in the fall. “To enrich such an experience we need sensory details, so I always have candles and soft throws to satisfy two sensations: our sense of smell and our touch.”
And these sensations serve several functions. “They are so important because they ground us, make us feel safe and snuggle up comfortably,” he says. “Add a good story and some hot coffee, and we can look at the foliage all day long, in all its grandeur.”
There are other places you can incorporate fall colors as well. “Kitchen accessories are a great place to bring in rich natural wood tones paired with deep hues of greens, eggplant, marigold, sienna and burgundy,” says Mastrangeli. “The textures of these pieces further add to the sumptuous feeling of color and space, creating visual warmth.”
She also recommends swapping out the library decor with knitted fall pumpkins in deep hues or other types of fall decor. “Doormats, runners and even area rugs can be replaced with rugs in richer fall textures and colors,” concludes Mastrangeli.
These are some of the items that can incorporate the sumptuous fall colors into your home.
